The Museum of Modern Art

Founded in 1929 as the first museum dedicated entirely to contemporary art, MOMA is host to an fabulous collection of modern artistic efforts. The permanent collection of the museum is a breathtaking catalog of the most famous and highest quality works of modern art. MOMA continues to mount shows of cutting edge new artistic efforts.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum is one of the giants of the art museum world. With millions of works of art, the museum houses a collection that, in quality as well as quantity, tells the story of art as a human preoccupation from beginning to end.  In addition to the expected features of museum websites, on this site you can sign up for "My Met Museum" for special online features such as a newsletter and notices of exhibitions of art that interests you.

The Whitney Museum

Boasting the most complete overview of twentieth-century American art of any museum in the world, the Whitney permanent collection consists of over 12,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and photographs.

The Guggenheim Museum

Housed in the famous building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Guggenheim Museum's architecture is as significant as the permanent collection and special exhibits. Here you can find out what's happening in other Guggenheim museums around the world. Additionally, you can get e-cards here.

The Cloisters

The Cloisters, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, was assembled from architectural elements, both domestic and religious, that date from the twelfth through the fifteenth century.  The Cloisters collection comprises approximately five thousand works of art from medieval Europe, dating from about the ninth to the fifteenth century.  This link takes you to the Cloisters site, which is not the same as the Metropolitan Museum's website.

Dia:Chelsea & Dia:Beacon

Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, is a museum to house its permanent collection comprised of major works of art from the 1960s to the present. Located on the Hudson River in Beacon, New York, Dia:Beacon occupies a nearly 300,000-square-foot historic printing factory.

 

Dia:Chelsea's location has been closed, and Dia is looking for a new Manhattan site. An archive of exhibitions can be found on this website.

Frick Collection

Formerly the home of steel magnate Henry Frick, the museum is a less visited museum which many pass over in favor of more well known New York museums. However, the museum houses a stellar collection. They have an e-newsletter, and are very active in art historical scholarship.

New Museum of Contemporary Art

Located in SoHo, this museum seeks to present a global picture of contemporary art. In addition to the galleries, the Media Z Lounge is always free and focuses on the exhibition and exploration of digital art, video and sound projects.

P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center

P.S.1 is dedicated to showcasing new and exciting art from contemporary artists. They have exhibitions, including artists retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming.

 

In 2000, P.S.1 became an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art to extend the reach of both institutions, and combine P.S.1 s contemporary mission with MoMA s strength as one of the greatest collecting museums of modern art. In addition to its home in Long Island City, P.S.1 operates the Clocktower Gallery in Lower Manhattan, which currently houses the headquarters of its online radio station, Art Radio WPS1.org.

The International Center of Photography is a museum and school dedicated to exploring the possibilities of the photographic medium through exhibitions and educational programs. They have a robust exhibitions schedule, and houses a collection of more than 100,000 original prints that span the history of photography. Their School offers full-time master's and certificate programs, as well as part-time and adult coursework.  In addition, they have a Community Programs Office, which organizes youth education initiatives, collaborates with local schools, community centers, and other cultural institutions to promote the communicative power of photography.
